WHAT’S TRENDING IN PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY

Your inside scope on the photography and videography trends for 2019.

Keeping up-to-date on what’s going on in the industry can be a great source of inspiration. It can even introduce you to new creative concepts that you haven’t tried or heard of before. Take some time to read up on the trends to further your skills and knowledge. After all, its a great way to learn and further your personal style.

Here’s a glimpse of the main photography trends you should keep an eye on in 2019:

1. DSLR are becoming a niche

If you want to turn your passion for photography into a career, DSLR is the best device for capturing incredible shots. It is also sometimes considered the “serious option” for those pursuing their photography passion. But in this day and age, the rapidly developing smartphones are challenging its throne. Smartphones and mirrorless cameras are more attractive than DSLR for amateur photographers as they are lighter and smaller in size. You don’t need a fancy camera to take photos and follow your passion. So, is DSLR dying? Not anytime soon, that’s for sure! DSLR is still the go-to for professional photographers. The quality of the images and ability to be more experimental with shots is only something you can capture effectively on DSLR. Things like battery life and lens options are crucial for photographers. So, it all comes down to what you want to capture and personal preference.

2. Video is evolving for portfolios

The saying goes that a picture tells 1000 words. But videos are trending as a more effective representation of your work. Showcasing a video means that people are more likely to engage with your content for a longer period of time rather than looking at a still image. Plus, it’s more interactive with the viewer. In the era of social media where intention spans have reduced to a fraction of a second, it is important to capture your audiences attention quickly and effectively. Video can offer a more complex story on your work, with the ability to be creative, engaging and inspiring.

3. Goodbye minimalism, hello vivid shots!

Minimalism was once the trend for photographers, with pastel colours and bright exposures. However, we are now seeing a trend emerge for Photographers are shifting from underexposed and unsaturated images towards higher contrast levels and vivid colour. Photographers are using the whole frame to compose their shots, ensure that no part of the end result can be perceived as dull. They are taking advantage of their environment and making the best possible outcome. For instance, what was previously considered bad weather is now the perfect opportunity to take some incredible shots.

4. Drones are in!

Do you remember the days where very few aerial images existed and Google Earth was the closest thing to show a perspective from above? Fast forward to today, we have these amazing quality drones which can be half the price of your new phone! This trend is rapidly growing across all genres, with landscape and travel photography having the most impact. 5. Candid photography is the new black

Photographers are abandoning the studio and taking their cameras onto the streets to capture candid photos. This is more authentic way to capture shots, allowing models to interact and be captured in a more natural setting. Whilst artificial lighting is still used to aid with the shoot, it enhances the look of a natural shot. This is particularly popular for weddings and fashion photography.

6. Outdoor photography is here to stay

Through 2019, expect to see amazing landscape shots across social media. The main sub-trends within outdoor photography will be product photography across a wide range of products.

7. Animals make the shot

Your four-legged friend will be your best friend in your photoshoot. Many photographers are incorporating their pets into their travelling shots, boosting their content. Who wouldn’t love a furry friend in their photo? You’ll be seeing a lot of adorable creatures on your Instagram feed this year!

8. Always be authentic

The photography trend that never goes out of fashion is being authentic! Practice your style and focus on what’s important is to you.
